Flow State:
An optimal state of consciousness, where an athlete’s feelings and performance are at their best. A state where one is so effortlessly focused that everything else disappears and your mind goes quiet as your body performs undirected.
The prefrontal cortex is the structure in our brain in charge of thinking and planning. During flow, this area of the brain goes quiet and is less active.
When quiet, it allows other parts of the brain responsible for skill execution and focus, to function better.
Doubts, worry, fear, anxiety are all overstimulations of the prefrontal cortex, meaning that when these thoughts go unmanaged, your focus is stolen and your performance suffers.
Flow state is mental resource management of the highest order and the state many athletes describe when they perform at their peak.
